Is there anything better than a Sunday Roast?

Our local bloggers have been on the hunt for some of the best Sunday Roasts in Cheshire. Please be aware that this blog contains mouthwatering roast potatoes, the crispiest yorkshire puddings and bottomless gravy. Let us know if we have missed any of your favourite places off the list, we will endevour to keep it updated!

The Antrobus Arms, Northwich

'Beautiful pub, Beautiful Roast'

It is always a pleasure visiting The Antrobus Arms, this family run pub is situated on warrington road in Northwich. It has a chic, modern interior and the service is always fabulous. Nothing is too much trouble! We first came here on a whim after googling nearby pubs to take the in-laws to. I ordered the roast (as it was a Sunday, so it would be rude not to), we did order a rather unconventional starter of calamari but I am so glad we did as it was cooked perfectly and super tasty! The main arrived and was beautifully presented with a giant roast on the top and lashings of gravy. I don't think there was even crumb left on the plate.

This is a lovely place to bring the family or a end of week date night. Great quality food and good value for money!

The Yard, Chester

'A fresher take on a Sunday Dinner'

This is definitely one of the freshest roasts I’ve ever had, my beef was a little on the rare side and I prefer my roasters crispy but because of the quality and amount of meat that we were given, not to mention how good the Yorkshire pudding was, I can forgive them.

It was lovely and great value for money, £15.50 for a roast dinner and a glass of house red/white or a beer (I’m sure they’d let you swap this for a soft drink as well.) Not bad if you ask me! The veg was cooked beautifully and they even got me some extra gravy once the kitchen closed; you’ve got to have gravy for the last bits don’t you. My partner loved it and commented that it was the best roast he’d had in a long time, super fresh, plenty of it and we really appreciated them fitting us in last minute.

The restaurant in the week is modern Italian and they serve both the regular menu on a Sunday as well as their roasts so even if you have a few people on your table who don’t fancy a Sunday dinner, there is plenty of other options available.

The Bowling Green, Northwich

'A roast at Northwich's oldest pub'

What are Sundays for if not to eat your weekly intake of protein and carbs smothered in gravy? Ivy and I headed to The Bowling Green in Northwich to try their Sunday lunch. It was so popular; a lot of their options had sold out! But there was enough for us to give it a try.

They do an adults and child's portion (£10.95/£6.95) which is perfect for little tummies, a nice starter selection and a variety of desserts. Your roast potatoes and vegetables all come separately, so you can portion them between you, and they were super accommodating in bringing the northern girl some more gravy; who can resist gravy!?

The setting of the pub is traditional with a modern spin. It's a really cosy pub with a great drinks’ selection and a good selection of beers on draught. Seeing Hobgoblin on tap was definitely a winner for me. Be sure to book to make sure you get those roasts in before they sell out and if you aren't up for going out, they do all their roasts as a takeaway option too.

The Kingfisher, Northwich

'Sunday lunch at the local'

Tracey and the staff are always so welcoming, always ready with crayons and paper to keep the kiddos entertained and a platter of Sunday goodness! Know this, I do not use the word ‘platter’ lightly…. The portions are huge, plus they offer bottomless gravy AND YORKSHIRE PUDS!

I only managed the one jug and one Yorkshire, however the hubby did me proud and ordered extra. I opted for the beef, he felt festive after the wintery start to the day so ordered the turkey. Both were plentiful, perfectly cooked, deslish and good for the soul! The mini’s however, they let the side down and ordered chicken and chips

But they were happy, entertained and well fed – perfect family afternoon.

The Village Restaurant, Blakemere Village

'The Carvery of dreams'

I first had this Carvery during lockdown in 2020 when they actually delivered the roast dinners to your door. Now The Village Restaurant is back open and better than ever. Served from 12pm on a Sunday you can choose from fresh meat (ham, beef or turkey) and as much trimmings as you can fit on your plate. The cauliflower cheese is super cheesy and the perfect accompaniment, without forgetting about the Yorkshire puddings and pigs in blankets (it's not even Christmas).

It's great value for money. All you can eat for £11 and £9 for children. The atmosphere is cosy and its nice to see people out enjoying a Sunday dinner again. Situated on Blakemere means once you have filled your boots you can then go and walk it off around some of the wonderful independent shops.

If you haven't tried this place yet, get it on your list for 2022.

Littlers Hartford Butchers, Hartford & Groobarbs Wild Farm, High Legh

'Local Sunday dinner in your pjs'

Cosy autumn and winter Sundays are no better spent than with a long walk, a good movie and the classic Sunday roast! When it’s extra chilly outside staying home and supporting local is the tastiest way to spend your day! For this week’s main event, roast chicken was on the cards, you can’t go wrong with a chicken dinner! The meat we used was bought from Littler's butchers. They’re a super friendly team, with good prices & top quality produce.

For the trimmings we used our groobox! A local farm vegetable delivery service with a promise of locality, seasonal and ethically grown fruit & vegetables!

To accompany the chicken, we made honey roast parsnips and carrots, roasted and mashed potatoes & sautéed sprouts with crispy bacon!

Tasty, fresh & local! Winner winner chicken dinner!
